At Freshwater Bay Primary School, we believe in nurturing well-rounded individuals by offering a diverse array of programs that spark curiosity and creativity. Students engage in classroom learning programs in HaSS, Health and Technology. Specialist Programs are offered in French, Music, Physical Education, Visual Arts, and Science. These are designed to enrich students’ educational experiences, providing them with the skills and knowledge to excel in their chosen fields. Students explore how these dynamic programs can ignite passion and help them achieve both personal and academic goals.
HaSS
Humanities and Social Sciences is the study of human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic and political contexts. Students develop the ability to question; think critically; make decisions based on evidence; devise proposals for actions; and communicate effectively. Thinking about, reflecting on, and responding to issues requires an understanding of the key historical, geographical, political, legal, economic, business and societal factors involved, and how these different factors interrelate.
Health
The Health program aims to develop students’ physical health, emotional well-being, social skills, and positive lifestyle choices. Through programs including Friendly Schools Plus, Zones of Regulation, Protective Behaviours and Mindfulness, students participate in engaging lessons and interactive activities designed so they can charge of their own health and well-being. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their health and develop a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle. By integrating these principles into daily learning, we help students build a strong foundation for their future health and well-being.
Technology
At Freshwater Bay Primary School we integrate the Western Australian Technology Curriculum to spark curiosity and innovation in our students. This curriculum provides a framework for exploring digital technologies, design processes, and critical thinking skills. Through hands-on projects and collaborative activities, students learn to use technology responsibly and creatively, developing skills in coding, robotics, and digital communication. Our approach not only enhances their technical abilities but also encourages problem-solving and teamwork. By embedding these technology principles into our lessons, we prepare students to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world and inspire them to become future innovators and leaders.
French
Through engaging activities, interactive lessons, and immersive experiences, our French program aims to spark curiosity and inspire a love for the French language and culture. Junior students focus on socialising and verbal interaction. Students learn key vocabulary and phrases through rhymes, games, and songs. From Year Three, students focus on written language and understanding grammatical structures and patterns. Students participate in surveys and interviews to interpret and convey information and engage with imaginative experiences through role-play and audio-visual production. All students have the opportunity to participate in whole–school cultural events such as the Alliance Française poetry competition and the annual French Breakfast.
Science
At Freshwater Bay Primary School, our specialist Science program provides an empirical way for students to become agile and flexible problem solvers prepared to engage with a world that demands high level skills and innovative thinking. Our aim is to foster the development of students’ scientific literacy and inquiry. This enables students to ask questions, conduct investigations, collect and interpret data, critique claims and make informed decisions. Students are provided with a platform, upon which to ask and answer significant questions about the biological, physical and technological world around them.
Music
Listening, singing, playing and moving to music are active ways of learning music at Freshwater Bay Primary School. Self-expression through creating music is inspired and encouraged. Students explore the elements of music and are given the opportunity to discover music of different genres and cultures in the well-resourced music room. Students develop basic keyboard and percussion playing skills and learn the ukulele in Year Three.
Throughout the year our Freshwater Bay Primary School Music program offers:
- Choir (Year Three-Six) Students perform at various school and wider community events including Massed Choir Festival.
- Instrumental Music School Service (IMMS) Program. IMMS provides instrumental tuition to selected students based on musical aptitude testing. Lessons in violin begin in Year Three, cello in Year Four and trumpet in Year Five. This scholarship also provides opportunities to participate in a range of music enrichment activities.
Art
Freshwater Bay Primary School offers an engaging Visual Art program that aims to inspire and enrich all students, excite their imagination and encourage them to reach their creative and expressive potential. Visual Art incorporates all three fields of art, craft and design. Students learn to design, create, represent, communicate and share their imagined and conceptual ideas, emotions, observations and experiences. Students develop and display their artistic skills in our purpose-built art room. They recognise and develop a cultural appreciation of visual arts in various contexts, through exploring and responding to artists and their artworks. Students challenge and express their own and others’ ideas, as both artists and audience, exploring and expanding their understanding of their world.
